The DKMS Family loses a little hero who did big things

DKMS patient who inspired thousands to join bone marrow registry dies

We at DKMS Americas are devastated by the loss of little Giovanni Guglielmo. Giovanni inspired tens of thousands of people to register as bone marrow donors and the lives of many, many patients have been saved because of him. The 5-year-old boy died Monday after a lifelong battle with a rare immune disorder.

“All of this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Giovanni,” says Katharina Harf. “It was almost like he came to this earth to do what he was meant to do.”
His legacy lives on. Little Giovanni will continue to inspire people to register and save lives.

HAPPY 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Over 600 transplants in the U.S.

DKMS Americas completed its very first bone marrow donation on February 1, 2007. Together as a team - only five years later - we have helped over 600 donors donate their bone marrow.

This is truly an incredible achievement because every single transplant provides a patient with a second chance at life.

These numbers are more than just statistics. They highlight the hard work that our team puts forth on a daily basis. Still, our work doesn't stop here.

Half of all patients still can't find a match. Let's continue to fight blood cancer together. Get swabbed today!

Solange Knowles

Exclusive interview from the DKMS Get Swabbed PSA shoot

1. Why are you bringing awareness to this cause? Kara is a young girl and you have a young son so we’re wondering if, as a mother, you felt for her family.

Solange: Absolutely! As a mother and most importantly as a human being. I attended the DKMS gala a couple years ago, and hearing all of the success stories of finding and matching donors was life changing.
I think getting educated about how simple, yet transformative the process is was extremely eye opening. A lot of people don't understand that it's literally a cotton swab that determines if your a match.
