The LLS + DKMS Bone Marrow Donor Drive
- New York, NY
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - NYC Chapter is organizing a bone marrow donor drive with DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center. Everyday, thousands of patients search for a lifesaving bone marrow donor. Sadly, 6 out of 10 patients will not receive the transplant they need. The more donors who register now, the more lives we can save.

Daisy's Story: Eleven years ago, at the age of 18, I was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Five years later, I had a relapse. Although I was extremely angry, I was optimistic about my recovery. I thought, "Hey, I beat it once. I can beat it again!" However, this time, I needed a bone marrow transplant. My family and friends all got tested to see whether they were a match to donate bone marrow to me, but this was unsuccessful. Luckily, someone halfway around the world was a close enough match. It was enough to save my life. I am forever grateful for this paerson's kindness. Because of him, I am free of cancer.
Maria's Story: In 2008, I went home to be with my father recovering from heart surgery. That weekend, I took my dad’s place working at a pharmaceutical convention. Around 8a.m, I remember walking over with my coffee to a donor drive to get swabbed. Three weeks later, I received a call that somewhere in the world there was a boy with leukemia and that I was a donor match for that boy! I proceeded with the necessary steps to confirm that I was the best match, and in February 2009 I donated my bone marrow. The patient and I have sent each other anonymous letters and now I’m counting the days to meet this wonderful young man. Being a donor has been the most fulfilling experience. I feel honored that I could give this gift of life and make a profound difference for this boy and his family. What only took a few days for me provided a lifetime to another. Today, I’m so proud to say my recipient is CANCER FREE!
Jeanette's Story: On March 4, 2010, I woke up with my left leg swollen from my thigh to my toes. In the ER I was told that I may have leukemia. I had a bone marrow biopsy and not only was I diagnosed with ALL, I also had Philadelphia Chromosome. Within two days I began chemotherapy. A month after, my sister was tested to see if she would be a match for a bone marrow transplant and the result showed that she was. Our family was relieved and only had to wait for me to go into remission in order to go through with the transplant. After six chemotherapy treatments, I was in remission. My sister went for testing, and the results showed that she was NOT a match. Now I must continue with chemotherapy until I find a donor. I have faith that I will find a match and be able to live a normal life again. Please register as a bone marrow donor. I look forward in seeing my two sons graduate college and start families of their own someday. With your help, many patients like me could be cancer free.
