Skin can become irritated and red from radiation therapy, especially under the arms or other areas where skin can rub against skin. Some patients also notice cracking and blistering with high doses. Skin problems normally disappear in a few weeks, but adopting a new routine can minimize damage.
You will need to change your normal skincare routine during therapy. Switch to a mild cleanser, use warm water, pat dry and apply SPF 15+ sunscreen. Even with sunscreen, sun exposure should be kept to a minimum.
Some products like cream, lotion, makeup, perfume and deodorant should not be used without doctor approval. Especially avoid gels, exfoliants and products with fragrance. Cornstarch may be used to reduce itching.
Infection is common while being treated, so do not share products, and always use disposable applicators instead of fingers to apply products.
