There are about 6,000 patients searching the National Donor Program Registry (NMDP) for a donor each day. One in four patients will not find a match. The chance to find a suitable donor might be more limited for certain minorities.
It’s often difficult to locate a match because tissue characteristics are so specific. Since tissue types are inherited, patients in need of a marrow transplant are most likely to match with someone from the same ethnic group.
To help meet the need, we are conducting more specific typing and holding donor drive campaigns to increase the diversity of the donor registry, including:
