Donation Process

Bone marrow donation is safe and private.

We're sure you have questions. Knowing what the donation process is like is important.

If you are found to be a match for a patient, more testing will need to be done to determine if you are the best suitable match for the patient. Additional testing includes collecting blood samples and a physical exam. If you are still identified as the best donor for the patient, an information session with DKMS will be scheduled so you can learn more about the donation process.

There are two ways - both outpatient procedures - that you can give life.

• Bone Marrow Donation: Approximately 20%-30% of collections
• Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC): Approximately 70%-80% of collections

Though donor preferences are considered, the method chosen ultimately depends on the treatment decision of the physician in care of the patient.
