Join DKMS and Pat as we Drive Nationwide to Fight Leukemia and other Blood Cancers
Did you know that every 5 minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer and that every 10 minutes, blood cancer takes a life? Did you know that leukemia is the most common disease children in the U.S. die of? And, did you know that only 2 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that could save their lives?
These are the hard facts, but with your help we can change these statistics.
DKMS and Pat, a 13 year old boy who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2006, are Driving for Donors to help battle leukemia and other blood cancers, by holding donor drives in select states across the country to recruit life-saving marrow donors.
The story behind Driving for Donors began when Pat heard about the shortage of marrow donors for patients with leukemia when a friend of his died because she couldn't find a match. This made Pat so sad and he wanted to do something to help!
With the same mission, to help save lives, Driving for Donors joined forces with DKMS, the world’s largest marrow donor center with over 1.7 million registered donors, to raise awareness of the need for donors. DKMS has helped facilitate over 13,500 donor and patient matches.
Each year more than 140,000 are diagnosed with leukemia or other blood cancers. The mission of DKMS is to give every leukemia and blood cancer patient a second chance at life, and with Pat and your help, we can accomplish this. Our goal is to register 8,000 donors, so that more hope can be given to patients and their families.
This will only be possible if everyone embraces this cause and supports the efforts of DKMS and Pat, this courageous young man. We need your help to make this movement a success!
Erica Murray was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), spending the past two years getting treatments. After going into remission this past March, Erica received the devastating news of a relapse and has since been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a more aggressive type of leukemia. While caught early, the only way to treat relapse of AML is a marrow transplant. This why we need you help! You can be the one to save a life! During the week of March 24th Regina was diagnosed with myelodysplasia (MDS), a life threatening disease, that occurs when the bone marrow stem cells malfunction. This results in the production of too many defective blood cells and not enough normal blood cells. Currently, the only option for cure is to find a healthy matching donor.
Regina must find a match and this is why we are asking for your help. Anyone, anywhere can be a potential match for Regina and other patients like her. You can save a life by registering as a marrow donor!
You may know Regina as an English teacher in the Jeffersonville-Youngsville School or as your guidance counselor at J-Y at Liberty High, at Sullivan West High or the BOCES Career and Technical Education Program or as a member of the Sullivan West Board of Education.
Regina worked for over three decades as an educator and advocate for youth in Sullivan County. Students, parents, and colleagues can attest to the compassion, the intelligence and commitment with which she served. She spent countless hours helping students make future decisions, resolve personal crises, and make healthy choices. She is the person who cheered and celebrated with you over every accomplishment and goal achieved.
Her selfless service saved lives. It’s our turn to save Regina! For more information go to www.GiftForRegina.com
At ten years old, Andrea is fighting an unimaginable battle against a fatal disease. Diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a disease of the bone marrow, only a marrow transplant will save her life. With the help of DKMS, the world's largest marrow donor center, local donor drives are being organized in her honor.
Andrea, a fifth grade student at Buckhannon-Upshur Intermediate School in Buckhannon, West Virginia, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in October 2007. Andrea complained of severe headaches at the beginning of the school year and was taken to a neurologist to determine the cause. She then became ill and was taken immediately to the local hospital for blood work. Andrea was sent to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia that same day with suspicion of leukemia. However after further testing, Andrea was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. She has since been at Columbus Children's hospital with her mother, Sheila, who has not left her side.
Andrea has had some recent complications but with support from her school and community, both she and her mother continue the agonizing wait for a marrow donor match.
We are asking for your help as a community and as people with a good heart to join the registry as a marrow donor. If you are found to be a match you can help to save Andrea or another patient like her. You can be the one to say: “I saved a life!”
On Christmas Eve 2006, Jacqueline Rose (Jackie), then only three years old, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Jackie’s amazing spirit and courage persevered and she completed therapy on August 5, 2007; she was cancer free. Sadly, on February 8, 2008 it was confirmed that Jacqueline’s leukemia had returned.
The only way to treat relapse of AML is chemotherapy followed by a marrow transplant.
