J.Lo has worked with DKMS to help raise awareness and inrease participation of Hispanics at donor drives. Her efforts have brought national attention to the urgent need for Hispanic donors.
Hispanic donors are scarce, and doctors say the best chance of a match is among members of the same ethnic group. Hispanics count for just 7% of registered donors worldwide, making it more challenging to find a match.
"We are all interconnected and depend on one another," said J.Lo, who is of Puerto Rican descent.
When J.Lo learned that Janet Ovalles, a fellow Latino, needed a marrow transplant, she spoke out to convince more Latino-Americans to become marrow donors.
"Even if they don't find a match for me, maybe it will be for someone else," said Ovalles. "There are so many people in need."
As a result of her efforts, J.Lo attracted major media to the need for donors of Hispanic decent in major publications throughout the U.S.
DKMS thanks J.Lo for all of her contributions to this life-saving cause.
“You have been wonderfully supportive and your organization is heads and shoulders above the rest. Thank you for everything you have done.”
