Bone Marrow Donor Drive Campaigns

Ever day thousands of patients searching the Be the Match Registry® (operated by the NMDP) for a donor. Only 4 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that can save their life. The chance to find a suitable bone marrow donor might be more limited for certain minorities.

It’s often difficult to locate a match because tissue characteristics are so specific. Since tissue types are inherited, patients in need of a bone marrow transplant are most likely to match with someone from the same ethnic group.

To help meet the need, we hold bone marrow donor drives across the United States to increase the diversity of the bone marrow donor registry. We've developed campaigns to help raise awareness of the need for more people to register as bone marrow donors, including:

  • Save Giovanni's Friends
    Reaching 10 states and Italy adding over 30,000 potential bone marrow donors to the national registry - all from the inspiration of one family whose life was touched by leukemia.
  • Get Swabbed. Save a Life.
    Visiting college and university campuses throughout the U.S. to build awareness and recruit young donors to participate in our life saving effort.
  • Love, Hope, Strength Foundation
    Leukemia survivors Mike Peters, of the rock band Alarm, and entertainment insurance executive, James Chippendale, created the Love Hope Strength Foundation to serve as a means of support for all people impacted by cancer. LHS together with DKMS, organize bone marrow donor drives across the U.S. to recruit donors and raise awareness.
  • St. Baldrick's
    Beginning as a casual conversation between friends, and now the world's biggest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer.
  • Driving for Donors
    Traveling across the country in a "Donormobile" recruiting the much needed marrow donors to help more patient with leukemia and other blood cancers find a life-saving match.
